Early detection through routine screenings, like the PSA test and DRE, significantly enhances survival rates and treatment success. Addressing misconceptions and fears about these screenings is crucial for improving health outcomes and quality of life.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, characterized by abnormal cell growth in the prostate. Key risk factors include age, genetics, hormonal levels, and lifestyle whereas awareness of symptoms such as frequent urination and pelvic pain is critical for early detection. Regular screenings are essential for high-risk individuals.
Prostate cancer is the most prevalent and deadly cancer among Nigerian men, with alarming statistics indicating a high mortality rate. Late diagnoses, lack of awareness, stigma, healthcare inequalities, and economic barriers contribute to this crisis. Immediate collective action is needed to improve awareness, screening, healthcare infrastructure, and policy support to combat this silent epidemic effectively.
The Rosana Empowerment Foundation emphasizes the neglected issue of men’s health, particularly prostate cancer, which is affecting families across Nigeria and Africa. Recognizing the growing health crisis and its impact on family stability, REF plans to launch a prostate cancer awareness and screening campaign.
