A Global Call to Protect Boys from Sexual Violence
Sexual violence against boys remains one of the most overlooked human rights issues of our time. While global movements have made significant progress in protecting girls from abuse, the conversation around boys’ safety, justice, and support remains largely in the shadows. This silence must end.
Since 2021, Family’s Blue Umbrella Day Campaign has worked tirelessly to raise awareness, advocate for policy change, and create safer spaces for boys. In 2024 alone, the campaign reached over a million people, including men and boys with lived experiences of childhood sexual violence.
Now, we are taking the next big step – we are calling on the United Nations to declare April 16th as Blue Umbrella Day, an International Day dedicated to the Prevention of Sexual Violence Against Boys.
Why Does the World Need a UN-Recognized Blue Umbrella Day?
A UN-recognized day would go beyond awareness – it would drive real action, policy change, and accountability at a global level. Here’s how:
1. Raising Awareness on a Global Scale
Declaring April 16th as Blue Umbrella Day would highlight the urgent need to protect boys from sexual violence, challenge harmful gender norms, and foster open conversations about the abuse boys endure.
2. Promoting Research and Policy Development
Sexual violence against boys is underreported and under-researched. A dedicated International Day would encourage governments and institutions to invest in research and develop evidence-based policies that meet the unique needs of boys who have survived abuse.
3. Ensuring Justice and Support for Survivors
Survivors of sexual violence need safe, effective, and specialized support services. A global recognition of April 16th would push for the establishment of counseling services, legal protections, and survivor-centered care for boys worldwide.
4. Fostering Global Solidarity
Ending sexual violence against boys requires a united, worldwide movement. A UN-recognized Blue Umbrella Day would bring together:
- Governments
- Civil society organizations
- Advocacy networks
- Funding bodies
- Academics
- Media
- Service providers
- Communities
- Survivors
By working together, we can amplify voices, share solutions, and drive change on a global level.
5. Holding Nations Accountable
When countries commit to internationally recognized days, they also commit to policy follow-ups and action. A UN-endorsed Blue Umbrella Day would:
- Ensure annual reporting on progress made in protecting boys.
- Push for legal frameworks that recognize male survivors.
- Establish global standards and best practices to prevent sexual violence against boys.
Violence against children takes many forms. It can be physical, emotional or sexual. It happens in all countries and any setting – in a child’s home, community, school and online. In some parts of the world, violent discipline is socially accepted and common. And for many girls and boys, violence comes at the hands of the people they trust – their parents or caregivers, teachers, peers and neighbours.
UNICEF works with governments and partners worldwide to prevent and respond to violence against children in all contexts.
We collaborate with governments across sectors – including health, education, the justice system, and other social services – and with partners in business, civil society, faith-based organizations and the media to prevent and respond to violence against children. At the national and local levels, our efforts strengthen laws and policies to improve public service delivery for children and families in their homes, communities and schools.
We also support parents and caregivers through parenting initiatives, while working with young people themselves to ensure their voices shape UNICEF programming.
